Vatican City State, Rome, Italy
Total Building Solutions for World Heritage Site
With its area of 0.44 square kilometers and a population of just under 1,000 inhabitants Vatican City is the world’s smallest sovereign state. The Vatican possesses unique cultural artifacts and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Beginning in 1941, Siemens has maintained a customer relationship with Vatican City for more than 70 years now. This close collaboration began with telephone installations, and has developed to include the latest fire safety and security technology now.
The requirements ranged from the energy-efficient operation of various building systems, access control and visitor management to a special protection against fire, vandalism and harmful environmental influences. Siemens systems take care of all these things, not only in high security areas like the Pope’s Residence in the Palazzo Pontificale, but also in practically every other building in Vatican City to ensure maximum protection and security of cultural artifacts and people.
Today, the Siemens solutions in the Vatican range from security, fire protection, and air-conditioning systems to electrical power supply and distribution. The fiber-optic-based network of all the fire protection systems includes more than 120 control units and thousands of fire detectors connected to the MM8000 monitoring system. The system itself is connected to the Vatican fire brigade, so that its intervention forces can use digitalized graphical plans and mapping systems with an indication of the severity of the danger and additional information on its source in a given location in order to respond to emergencies promptly and systematically. In addition, the technical building systems are being continuously modernized and connected to the Desigo building automation and control system, which ensures maximum integration of various systems as well as maximum autonomy in controlling and monitoring.
The expertise Siemens has gained over more than 70 years partnering with the Vatican is evident in the deep integration of systems, maximum openness and scalability, and the use of state-of-the-art components. The customer benefits not only from a single contact partner for all Siemens projects, but also from cost-cutting opportunities that were realized during implementation, operation, and maintenance of the Siemens solution. Furthermore, the Desigo monitoring system enables easy operation, sustainability and permits building managers and operators fast access to the platform from everywhere. Thus Siemens ensures comprehensive, ideally adjusted security for facilities, cultural artifacts and people.
