The Song-do RFID Research Center is a research institution under the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. It is dedicated to micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and sensors as well as ubiquitous IT clusters and has several ISO class 3 clean rooms.

Requirements

In the event of a fire, hazardous products and chemicals could cause severe damage to the infrastructure. The high air flow rate in clean rooms is also a hindrance to fire detection. The requirements for reliable fire protection – from detection to automatic extinguishing – are thus extremely demanding.

Solution

Siemens implemented an ASD aspirated smoke detection system with four levels of event messages – alert, action/control, pre-alarm and fire alarm – and an extinguishing system based on the HFC227ea chemical extinguishing agent. The clean rooms feature 13 systems for ASD aspirated smoke detection, ten of which monitor the false ceilings and the plenum area. The other three monitor the chip bonding clean room, are responsible for alarms, and also for triggering the extinguishing system. The fire control panel is integrated within a danger management system.
