Readers of Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) have chosen Siemens Building Technologies’ TALON® Building Automation System to receive its highest honor, the Gold Award in the magazine’s prestigious annual “Product of the Year” competition. Not only was TALON awarded the top honor; it was also the only building automation system in the industry to win in this category. A leading resource serving building control and other system designers, CSE is circulated to more than 46,000 mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and fire protection system engineers throughout North American industry.
“We take the opinions of Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine’s readers very seriously,” said Kevin Cunningham, TALON’s director of sales for Siemens Building Technologies. “And we are thrilled that both the panel of judges and the publication’s readers agree that when it comes to building automation systems TALON sets a ‘Gold’ standard against its competitors.”
According to CSE, the Product of The Year (POY) awards were established to provide the magazine's print and electronic subscribers with a compilation of the best, peer-reviewed new products in the major M/E/P engineering system disciplines. Winners were chosen in a 2-step process: first, an independent panel of engineering judges scored all POY entrants. Subscribers and Web users then scored each product in a category from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. Subscribers began voting in May, 2009 for their choices, casting only one vote in each category for their Most Valuable Product (MVP). Winners were announced in the magazine’s August, 2009 issue.
“The Product of the Year competition illuminates the products design engineers and specifiers are valuing for MEP systems in nonresidential buildings. In this tough economy, construction and operating budgets are under stress while sustainability issues for energy, water, and materials are growing. Flexibility, modularity, efficiency, and durability seemed to be factors shared by many of this year’s winners.” said Michael Ivanovich, CSE’s editor-in-chief.
To expand the capabilities of its independent controls contractor channel, Siemens Building Technologies introduced a new version of TALON building automation based on the versatile, open BACnet® protocol in 2008. With BACnet, TALON controls offer advanced integration capabilities and a comprehensive set of tools to ease the design, installation and commissioning that today’s building controls contractors need to tackle the most sophisticated projects profitably.
Building controls contractors’ role as building automation system integrators is growing more prominent everyday. As the projects they win grow more complex, so does their need for reliable access to flexible control technologies and relevant technical information. To help meet these critical demands, the TALON brand is available through the company’s nationwide network of Siemens Solutions Partners – independent integrators and controls contractors.
Key to TALON’s versatility is the broad array of integration drivers that enable precise HVAC system management as well as tightly integrated control of security, fire and lighting systems and building operator-friendly management capabilities. These features are designed to optimize building owners’ investments and allow greater owner control and management of their systems.
With open architecture based on BACnet or LonTalk® protocols and advanced tools that ensure precise control schemes and trouble-free system implementation, TALON building automation provides integrators with ultimate flexibility and the tools they need to keep projects on schedule and in the black. Physical barriers to system implementation are also virtually eliminated now that Siemens offers a wireless sensor for TALON. TALON wireless can help improve a building operator’s return on retrofit investment, fulfill new tenant needs and enable new levels of building operating efficiency and energy management in either as-built or new construction environments.
